Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Serving Bala Cynwyd & Philadelphia

Besides being a source of annoyance to your partner, loud snoring is a good indicator for sleep apnea. What is sleep apnea? It is a very dangerous condition that affects millions of people…most people do not know they have this condition because it happens while they sleep. Why is it dangerous? Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing for long periods of time which can lead to stroke, heart attacks and death.

Sleep apnea has been known to cause:

  • Hypertension or high blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure
  • Irregular heart beat
  • Diabetes
  • Headaches
  • Lack of deep sleep
  • Tiredness during the day
  • Depression

People most at risk are:

  • Male
  • Overweight
  • Neck size over 17
  • GERD
  • Nasal Obstruction
  • Large tongue

In sleep apnea and snoring, the tongue and soft palate relax and meet. This effectively seals off the flow of air and stops your breathing.

When the body detects that the oxygen level in your blood stream dips to unsafe levels, you awaken with a start and you begin to breathe again. You fall back to sleep, the tongue and palate relax, obstructing the airway and you stop breathing again. This cycle may happen a hundred times a night. Because your sleep is interrupted, you never get a deep restful night’s sleep.

If you or your partner suspects that you are a loud snorer, or if you wake up abruptly, see your dentist for advice. At Oasis Dental, we will work with your physician to arrange a sleep study. We can fabricate a nighttime oral appliance that will keep your airway open and help prevent sleep apnea and snoring. Oral devices are successful in 85 percent of cases. If the oral appliance is not effective, the use of a CPAP machine is recommended. CPAP or Continuous Positive Air Pressure, is a night time device that pushes open the airway using air pressure. Because CPAP devices are very cumbersome, compliance is poor and people often stop using them. The custom made oral appliance is easy to use, smaller, portable and effective. It is documented that compliance and continued use of the oral appliance/ snore guard is much higher than CPAP.

Fabricating your appliance is an easy office visit. All that is needed are models of your teeth and a record of your bite. Your records are sent to our lab and your custom snore appliance is fabricated within two weeks. Soon you will experience deeper sleep, you will feel energized and your spouse will be forever grateful.
